Remember when singers like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson would grace our screens every Tuesday and Wednesday night on American Idol? Now, there's a new girl in town, and she's really, really cool. It only begins with her neon pink hair; we got to know her better in her Music Series talk.
How Do YA know TheYaSisters?
I met Maya through doing theater when we were younger.
What do YA do?
I am a singer-songwriter/recording artist.
Where are YA from?
I’m from the Hudson Valley in New York.
When did you know you wanted to be a singer?
When I first saw Mary Poppins on Broadway, I turned to my mom, and I said “THAT is what I want to do”.
How do you get inspired for your songwriting?
I tend to write songs that reflect what’s happening in my personal life. It’s just easier for me to connect with, rather than writing songs about other people.
What was it like being on American Idol?
It was such a crazy experience! I learned so much about myself as a performer, and met so many amazing people!
What was your process of finding your American Idol audition song?
There are producer rounds before the celebrity judges round, so the producers kind of help you lean towards specific songs to do at the celeb audition! My whole American Idol story is on my website www.ameliaroseallen.com!
What was the best piece of advice YA learned from your experience on American Idol?
I learned not to be afraid of anything. Everything is temporary. So, being nervous during the competition is only temporary!
Who inspires YA and why?
One of my biggest inspirations is St. Vincent (Annie Clark). She has always stayed true to herself throughout her career and is an amazing songwriter.
We absolutely love your hair! What made you go pink?
Thank you! I decided to go pink about a year and a half ago, and it just really stuck.
Who is your dream artist to work with?
Connor Mason from Nothing But Thieves or Rex Orange County.
What is the reaction you hope listeners will have after they hear your music?
I hope people find that my music can be interpreted however they hear it, and I hope they can connect with my stories.
Where can people follow you/listen to your music?
People can follow me @ameliarose.allen on instagram & tik tok, and my twitter is @redglassesgal
1. What is something you care deeply about?
I have always been really passionate about protecting the environment from global warming and climate change. My first song was actually called “Save the Whales” (which I wrote when I was around 7 years old) and also featured a verse about deforestation. This is also part of the reason that I’m vegan!
2. Top 3 songs you can’t stop listening to right now:
1. Stigmata - Grandson
2. No Plan - Hozier
3. Hands - Flatsound
3. The last movie you saw in a theatre
I think it may have been The Meg (the shark movie starring the actor who plays Dwight from the office).
4. Favorite musical:
Right now, I’ve been obsessed with Hadestown, but my favorite musical of all time is probably Bonnie & Clyde.
5. If there was one thing you could change in the world, what it be and why?
It would be to force big companies to use green energy, so we can conserve non renewable energy sources for things we really need them for.
